St. Michael's chapel, Brent Knoll, Somerset

solitary hill - ? chapel - iron age fortification / settlement.- beacon - giant legend

Brent Knoll is a solitary hill, 450' high, whose summit is crowned with the what is arguably the finest remaining iron age fortifications in Somerset.

View across the Severn to Dinas Powys in South Wales

The Ladywell stands on the North East side of the knoll. The Rev. Armitage Robinson in his 'History of Glastonbury' tells how Arthur took the warrior Ider with him to fight against three giants at Brent Knoll.

St. Agnes beacon.

St. Agnes Although of no great height (628' above sea level) St. Agnes Beacon on the north coast of Cornwall commands a view from St. Ives to Trevose Head to Brown Willy on Bodmin moor.

There is no mention of the parish of St Agnes in the Domesday Book.

From St. Agnes Beacon on a clear day it is possible to see no less than thirty church towers;- Agnes, Mithian, Perranzabuloe, Newlyn East, Cubert, St. Enoder, St. Columb Minor, Colan, St. Eval, Tintagel, St. Dennis, Roche, Gerrans, St. Michael Caerhayes, Probus, St. Allen, St. Erme, Mount Hawke, Baldhu, Treleigh, Redruth, St. Day, Tuckingmill, Illogan, Camborne, Gwinear, Ludgvan, Paul, St. Ives and Truro Cathedral.

Tintagel

From Kings Down above Tintagel, beside the remains of a ( Roman? ) camp at Trenale Bury, the view is from Hartland Point to Trevose head, Rough tor and Brown Willy, and Delabole.

St. Michael's chapel, Bude.

remains of a chapel to St. Michael on the harbour breakwater at Bude.

St. Michael's, Braunton, North Devon.

solitary hill - St. Michael chapel - beacon - moving legend

St Brannoc's church in Braunton was originally to be built on chapel hill, the site of St. Michael's chapel, but each days work was demolished by night. So when Brannoc saw a sow suckling her piglets in the valley he built his church there.

Lines From the St. Michael / Dragon line to Lundy

From Roche Rock [St.Michaels Chapel ] goes thru TINTAGEL.

From Brentor [St.Michaels Chapel ] Goes thru Hartland Abbey.

From Burrowbridge [St.Michaels Chapel ] Goes thru St.Elen's Chapel. Croyde.

From Glastonbury [St.Michaels Chapel ] Goes thru Dunkery Beacon [The highest point on Exmoor].

Taking the island of Lundy as a focus for a series of lines drawn across the most prominent headlands of the north coast of Cornwall and Devon shows some  interesting examples of what Robert Graves referred to as 'more than coincidence.'
