SIR GAWAIN ( welsh Gwalchmai ) is the nephew to King Arthur, by his sister Morgana who is married to Lot, king of Orkney and Lothian. Sir Gawain was one of the most famous knights of the Round Table, and is characterized by the romancers as the 'sage and courteous Gawain'. Gawain's brothers are Agravain, Gaheris, Gareth and Mordred.

Gawain plays a significant role in many of the Arthurian texts.

Gawain is a solar hero / sun god whose strength waxes and wanes with the sun, reaching it's apogee at noon.

The story of Gawain and the Green Knight is arguably the greatest surviving work of english Literature

Gawain and the Green Knight - Jesse Weston

Chretien de Troyes tells the story of Gawain's grail quest.  Gawain is carried to the Castle of Marvels by a ferryman (otherworldly guide) After entering the castle Gawain defeats the Perilous Bed, kills the Ravenous Lion and ends the enchantment. He then meets and frees the three queens imprisoned there. They are his grandmother ( Ygerne ), Gawain's mother (Morgan) and his sister (Elaine). (The Triple goddess - maiden, nymph and hag)

'The Latin form of Gawain and the Fr. Gauvain is Gualganus or Walganus, which is a slightly corrupt or perhaps "Welshified" form of Volcanus, the Roman god Vulcan, who was identified with the Greek smith-god Hephaistos. Gawain, then, is Gofannon, the Welsh divine smith'   The Road to Avalon.

Gawain = Galahad (island- Sarras) = Gwair (island- Lundy) = Gwalchmai)
