Le Morte d'Arthur - Book 21

The Battle of Camlann - Mystic Realms Arthurian Poster #A09

Then, ere that last weird battle in the west

There came on Arthur sleeping, Gawain killed

In Lancelot's war, the ghost of Gawain blown

Along a wandering wind, and past his ear

Went shrilling, 'Hollow, hollow all delight!

Hail, King! tomorrow thou shalt pass away.

Farewell! there is an isle of rest for thee.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

In a last attempt to avert war  Arthur and Mordred met between their hosts.

( The 'Dream of Rhonabwy' from the Mabinogion, set on an island in the Severn, refers to this battle between Arthur and Mordred / Medrawd /Owain. )

( Mordred and Owain are different names for the same person, Arthur's heir. )

Arthur and Mordred, mistrustful, each warned his followers that if they saw any sword drawn they were to come on fiercely and slay all.

Arthur and Mordred met

and talked

and wine was fetched

and they talked,

then came an adder out of a little heath bush,

Arthur drew his sword to slay the adder, and thought of none other harm.

The Snake in the Grass

The armies on both sides

saw the flash of the drawn sword

and so began ...

The last weird battle in the west
